The British Golf Museum is celebrating the Anniversary of the 1st Amateur Championship in 1885 by opening its doors to the public for FREE on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd April.

Starting on 20th April 1885, Royal Liverpool Golf Club hosted a championship for amateur players.  It was such a success that it was agreed to hold a full national Amateur Championship on an annual basis starting in 1886. A new trophy was acquired and was presented to the 1886 winner, Horace Hutchinson.

In 1922, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club recognised that the 1885 tournament “was in everything but name a Championship Competition” and the 1885 winner, Allan F Macfie, was given his rightful place as the first winner of this great championship.

Come along to the museum and discover more about the fascinating history of the Amateur Championship.  You can see a replica of the Amateur Championship Trophy and you can learn about past illustrious winners including Bobby Jones, Roger Wethered and John Laidlay.  Enjoy our new exhibitions and audio-visual displays.  Take the opportunity to browse in our shop and pick up one of our limited edition golfing prints.

Celebrate the Anniversary of the 1st Amateur Championship for free and take the perfect break from playing golf!
