World famous painting, The Golfers by Charles Lees has returned to St Andrews.  It is on display at the British Golf Museum from the 1st August until the end of September. The painting is on loan from its permanent home at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

Charles Lees’ masterpiece The Golfers: A Grand Match played over the Links of St. Andrews on the day of the Annual Meeting of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, was completed in 1847. The immense work captures the spirit, vibrant colour and characters of the early game. It shows a match in progress over the Old Course. There are over 50 figures in the completed work, most of whom are famous in the world of golf.

Charles Lees was born in Cupar and was a leading Scottish artist who regularly showed works at the Royal Scottish Academy annual exhibition.  This rare chance to see the famous work by a local born artist will make your visit to St Andrews complete.

Accompanying the painting is the highly acclaimed book The Golfers- The Story Behind the Painting by Peter N.Lewis and Angela D. Howe, published by the National Galleries of Scotland. It is available in the British Golf Museum Shop as are prints and postcards of The Golfers.

This will make the perfect break from playing golf.
