In the 1920s, British players like Roger and Joyce Wethered dominated the Amateur game. By the 1930s however, the Americans were beginning to make their presence felt with players like Bobby Jones taking to the field.

The inter-war period also saw three Royal Captains take office in the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.
