2006 sees the 400th anniversary of the Union Flag and here at the British Golf Museum we are raising the flag in celebration of this.
In 1606 James VI of Scotland declared that St George’s cross and St Andrew’s cross should be joined together to form a flag that represented the Kingdom of Great Britain. In 1801, after the Act of Union was passed, the cross of St Patrick was added and the whole of the United Kingdom was represented by the flag.
In recognition of its unique British content, the Museum and its management team have taken the joint decision to fly the Union Flag from now on. We will be holding a small ceremony to raise the flag at 12 noon on Wednesday 12th July. Mr A Cormack, attending on behalf of the Flag Institute, will be raising the flag at the ceremony.
The British Golf Museum contains a unique collection of golf artefacts from across the globe, but the collection of items from the British Isles make this a truly memorable visit for any golf enthusiast. In our new exhibition on The Open Championships since 1946 you can tour around all the venues of The Open in Britain. On display you will also find all parts of the Union Flag represented, from Nick Faldo’s shirt that he wore on Muirfield in 1992, to Sandy Lyle’s sweater and Fred Daly’s clubs. This will make the perfect break from playing golf.
