“Old Tom Morris”
unveils bronze statue of Old Tom at the British Golf Museum
Mr David Joy, famous for his portrayal of Old Tom Morris, performed
the unveiling of a life-size bronze statue of Old Tom , one of
St. Andrews most well-known characters, at the British Golf Museum
on Friday.
The statue, standing over 6 feet tall, was donated to the Museum
by the The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America
(GCSAA). They commissioned the sculpture last year to mark 75
years of service to the greenkeeping profession. Old Tom serves
as a symbol of their profession and an identical statue rests
in place of honour at their Headquarters in Kansas, USA.
The sculpture was designed by Brad Pearson, full-time greenkeeper
at Holdrege Country Club, Nebraska and part-time artist. Pearson
wanted his icon, Tom Morris, to be monumental, so he made him
larger than life.
Sam Groves, Assistant Curator commented “We are delighted
to have been presented with this statue. Old Tom has been placed
in the front window of the Museum, with a view of the golf courses,
and he certainly does look larger than life!”
