During this era, 3 men came to dominate the professional game. They were J.H.Taylor, Harry Vardon and James Braid, known as “The Triumvirate”.

Between them, they won the Open 16 times and achieved great success in many other tournaments. This was occurring at a time when interest in the Open was beginning to increase with more entrants and changes in the format of the Championship occurring.
