Who was the first lady golfer?

The first written reference to a lady playing golf was made in 1568. Mary, Queen of Scots was the lady. She is known to have played golf and to have visited St Andrews. There is no direct evidence to say that she played golf there, however.

Things to think about:

Find out more about Mary, Queen of Scots. Who was she? Why do you think she has an important place in Scottish history? Can you think of any other famous ladies who play golf today? Which tournaments do these ladies play in?
